Volkswagen AG said on Friday that its global sales fell by 6.6% to 792.200 vehicles in August while in the period from January to August group deliveries fell by 21.5% to 5.57 million vehicles.

Sales in North America recorded the largest fall of 18.7%, while in Western Europe sales stood at 16.6%. Central and Eastern Europe recorded a 5.3% fall. Meanwhile, the German car producer saw a 3.5% increase in the Chinese market.

In July, sales chief Jurgen Stackmann resigned while low sales of Golf and Passat, the company's flagship car models, were mentioned as a possible reason.
