US markets open lower as data pulls indexes down

The main United States stock indexes opened on Thursday with losses as both the Dow Jones and the Nasdaq 100 lost over 250 points. The Census Bureau reported housing starts across the US dropped by 5.1% to an annual rate of 1,416,000 in August, while the number of initial jobless claims decreased to 860,000, but still stood higher than analysts expected.

The Dow Jones dropped 1.07% or 303 points at 9:30 am ET, as Apple led the losses with the 2.08% fall. The Nasdaq 100 plummeted 266 points or 2.37%, with Tesla falling by 5.44% two minutes later. The S&P 500 fell by 1.60% at the same time. Occidental Petroleum Corp was the worst performer, going down by 3.61%.

The euro was 0.10% lower compared to the dollar to sell for $1.18039 at 9:29 am ET.
