Wall Street closes mostly in red as Fed keeps rate steady

Trading on Wall Street finished mostly in red on Wednesday after the Federal Open Market Committee voted to leave the target range for the federal funds rate unchanged at 0.00-0.25%. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said the US economy may need more fiscal and monetary support in order to recover from the coronavirus pandemic. On the data front, US business inventories went up by 3.2% in July while the housing market index climbed to a record high in September. The retail sales grew by 0.6% MoM in August.

At the end of today's session, the Dow Jones gained 0.14% at the close. Chevron Corp jumped by 2.95%. The S&P 500 declined by 0.46%. The Nasdaq 100 fell 1.67%. Illumina Inc. was the worst performer plunging by 8.44% in both indexes.

The euro was down 0.42% against the dollar, buying 1.17972 at 3:55 pm ET.
