France's Ministry of Armed Forces announced on Thursday that it will be deploying two Rafale fighter jets and its naval frigate Lafayette to the Eastern Mediterranean as tensions between Turkey and Greece mount in the region.

Paris said it was looking to increase its military presence in the region amid a continental shelf exploration dispute between Turkey and Greece.

Earlier, Greece called the European Union to back its criticism of Turkey after Ankara sent oil exploration vessel Oruc Reis to areas that Greece designates as belonging to its continental shelf. Ankara announced its exploration would take place from August 10 to August 23.
