The Munich II public prosecutor's office revealed on Thursday that it charged four former board members of Volkswagen (VW) Group's Audi AG.

Three of them are charged with fraud, indirect false certification and criminal advertising for allegedly knowingly selling a total of 434,420 vehicles of the Audi, VW and Porsche brands that used the engine control software to cheat laboratory emissions testing, which was the focal point of the "dieselgate" scandal. They committed the alleged crimes between October 2013 and September 2015.

One of the former executives has been accused of deceiving Audi about his involvement in the scandal ahead of his admission to the carmaker's board.
