Wall Street gives up early gains amid persistent trade fears

Neither a fresh batch of solid economic data, including US trade deficit shrinking and a modest rise in factory orders, nor positive signals on trade seemed enough to brighten investor sentiment on Wall Street on Thursday, letting stock markets slide to losses shortly into the session.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said it is keeping in close touch with Washington in an effort to strike a trade accord, but reiterated that a deal may be reached only if the other side agrees to roll back existing tariffs. Yesterday's reports suggested the two sides are making progress on the issue, although the US has been silent regarding the condition.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.20% at 10:48 am ET. The Nasdaq 100 followed suit, declining 0.13% at the same time. The S&P 500 was down 0.10% a minute later.

The euro traded 0.11% up against the US dollar, going for 1,10925 at 11:30 am ET.
