Tocilizumab more effective than hydroxychloroquine - doctors

Italian doctors said on Sunday that the Roche's drug Actemra, generally known as tocilizumab proved more efficient in treating coronavirus patients than hydroxychloroquine.

The anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine has been advocated for by United States President Donald Trump and has been used to treat patients in the US and several other countries. However, the US Food and Drugs Administration warned against the use of the drug outside of hospitals or clinical trials due to the risk of heart rhythm problems.

Meanwhile, tocilizumab has been used to treat COVID-19 patients with severe symptoms in countries including China, Italy and the US since March.
