CLEARWATER, Fla., Aug. 03, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- On Wednesday the 16th of August, the Florida chapter of United for Human Rights (UHR) Center, a group supported by the Church of Scientology, is hosting a workshop on Human Trafficking. The event will be held in the United for Human Rights Center in downtown Clearwater at 7:00PM and features renown poet and author of the book “One Child Sold”, Mr. Larry Jaffe.

“With knowledge comes power,” said Mr. Jaffe. “Learn what Human Trafficking is and you might just save a life.”

Worldwide, an estimated 20.9 million people today are victims of human trafficking. The US reports 60,000 human trafficking victims, 55% of whom are women and children. Florida ranks third in the United States for the most human trafficking.  And Tampa Bay is a breeding ground for the trafficking of minors. In January 2016, the Tampa Tribune reported the case of the 13 year old and her 4 year old sister who were being sold by their grandmother every day in the streets for drugs (1).

United for Human Rights is dedicated to educating the public about their 30 Human Rights as articulated in the United Declaration for Human Rights (UDHR). Modern day slavery appears in UDHR articles: “Right to Life”; “No Slavery”, “No Torture”; “No Unfair Detainment”.

“The problem is closer than you think, said the Executive Director of UHR, Emma Ashton. You might meet a trafficking victim when you go to the store, get your hair done, order food. In our United for Human Rights Center we are hosting these workshops so we can educate the public on how to recognize a potential situation and how to do something effective about it.”
