Johnson: New COVID variant may be more deadly

United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Friday that the new coronavirus variant first detected in Britain in December appears to be more deadly than the old variant.

"We've been informed today that, in addition to spreading more quickly, it also now appears that there is some evidence that the new variant, the variant that was first identified in London and the southeast, may be associated with a higher degree of mortality," Johnson said at a press conference. According to early laboratory studies, the new strain has a mortality degree of 1.3%-1.4%.

However, Johnson pointed out that "all current evidence" suggests that both vaccines currently used in the UK, those developed by Pfizer and BioNTech and AstraZeneca and Oxford University, are effective against both variants, the original and the new strain.
