US markets open lower on data, earnings

Major stock indexes in the United States started the final trading session of the week in the red as the focus remained on today's corporate earnings and economic data. Citigroup Inc.'s and Wells Fargo & Co.'s revenue declined, while JPMorgan Chase & Co. posted an increase on a yearly basis. Meanwhile, the country's Bureau of Labor Statistics reported producer prices climbed 0.3% in December, while Census Bureau said retail sales fell 0.7% during the same month.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 0.21% at the opening bell, with Dow Inc. losing 2.75%. The S&P 500 decreased 0.18% as Wells Fargo dropped 4.08%. The Nasdaq 100 began flat, but soon climbed above the flatline with Zoom Video Communications Inc. jumping 3.93%.

The euro was down 0.44% against the dollar at 9:29 am ET, changing hands for $1.21104.
