Google threatens to block its search function in Australia

Google said it is considering disabling its search function on the territory of Australia if the country’s Parliament approves a law that says that both Google and Facebook have to pay local media companies for their content.

Google Australia managing director Mel Silva confirmed that "if this version of the code were to become law, it would give us no real choice but to stop making Google Search available in Australia." Prime Minister Scott Morrison on the other hand stated the government "would not respond to threats."

The law states that all digital platforms are obliged to pay media companies for news content, while the US government suggested Australia should pursue a voluntary code instead.
