Intel Corporation announced on Wednesday its CEO Bob Swan will step down on February 15 to be succeeded by Pat Gelsinger (pictured).

"Pat is a proven technology leader with a distinguished track record of innovation, talent development, and a deep knowledge of Intel. He will continue a values-based cultural leadership approach with a hyper focus on operational execution," Omar Ishrak, independent chairman of the Intel board, said in a statement, adding he "deeply appreciates Bob Swan for his leadership and significant contributions through this period of transformation for Intel."

Gelsinger, who has been serving as CEO of VMware since 2012, was the first chief technology officer of Intel Corporation and senior vice-president and general manager of the Digital Enterprise Group before leaving the company in 2009.
