Dow ends final session of 2020 with record high

Shares on the major stock market indexes in the United States traded higher at the end of the session on Thursday, finishing 2020 with gains despite the COVID-19 crisis that went on for its largest part. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the year with a fresh record high.

During the session's final hour, the World Health Organization (WHO) granted an emergency use validation to the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, making it the first jab to have received a WHO stamp of approval.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 0.65% or 196 points as the session came to a close with Intel Corp. up by 2.19%. Compared to the same time the year prior, the Dow Jones rose by 7.02%. The Nasdaq 100 went up by 0.33% at the closing bell with Micron Technology soaring 4.53%. The Nasdaq skyrocketed 47.58% on an annual basis. The S&P 500 wrapped up the bout of trading 0.64% above the flatline, almost matching its all-time high, and increasing 15.96% year on year. The best performer on the index was Western Digital Corp., with an 11.83% rise seen at the session's end. The euro dropped 0.64% versus the dollar at 3:58 pm ET, selling for 1.22160.
