United States State Secretary Mike Pompeo announced on Friday that Washington had imposed new sanctions on several officials of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) over their efforts to "spread propaganda and coerces and bullies those who would oppose Beijing's policies."

"These malign activities are intended to co-opt and coerce sub-national leaders, overseas Chinese communities, academia, and other civil society groups both in the United States and other countries in furtherance of the CCP's authoritarian narratives and policy preferences," Pompeo's statement read.

Earlier in the day, the Chinese Foreign Ministry urged Pompeo to stop interfering in its internal affairs, specifically referring to Hong Kong, and "refrain from "smearing China in the name of freedom and democracy."
