China demands info on 6 US media companies

Chinese Foreign Ministry demanded on Monday information on the China-based branches of six United States media companies in response to the US designating six Chinese outlets as foreign missions. The ministry said the measure is "entirely necessary" due to the "unreasonable oppression" of Chinese media in the US.

Beijing is seeking information about the staff, finance, operation and real estate of the American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), The Los Angeles Times, Minnesota Public Radio, Bureau of National Affairs, Newsweek and Feature Story News. The companies must comply within seven calendar days. The ministry called on Washington to "immediately change course, undo the damage, and stop its political oppression and arbitrary restrictions on Chinese media organizations" or face further countermeasures.
