Apple Inc. is negotiating the acquisition of Intel Corp.'s smartphone-modem chip unit, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. The deal, which could be announced next week, would be worth at least $1 billion and include a portfolio of patents and staff, people familiar with the matter said.

The report claimed the deal would enable Apple to develop chips for 5G in order "to further differentiate its devices as smartphone sales plateau globally." Meanwhile, Intel is interested in selling its modem business which has been "losing about $1 billion annually," according to one source, as well as "generally failed to live up to expectations." Intel would continue developing 5G technology for devices other than smartphones, the WSJ wrote.
