US tech firms sell parts to Huawei despite ban - report

Some United States tech companies continued selling "millions of dollars of products" to Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. after the Trump administration implemented a ban on trade with the Chinese giant, the New York Times reported. People familiar with the matter said firms such as Intel Corp. and Micron Technology Inc. started sending components to Huawei around three weeks ago.

According to the sources, the companies are using a loophole which allows them to sell their products as long as they are not made in the US, since those products do not count as being American-made. The ban immediately prohibited US companies from selling parts for future Huawei products, while equipment for current products can be sold until the middle of August. The sources added that the administration is aware of the tech companies' dealings with Huawei but that "officials are split about how to respond."
