Apple in talks to buy Intel's modem unit - report

Apple Inc. is reportedly still in talks to buy Intel's smartphone modem unit, the Information reported citing people familiar with the matter.

According to the report, Intel is considering selling its modem business in parts and Apple is interested in the strongest, based in Germany because Intel already bought chip maker Infineon's modem operations there. The potential deal could boost Apple's internal plans to create a custom modem for its devices, the sources said and added that the deal could fall through since the two companies have been in discussions since last year.

Last month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple negotiated with Intel about buying parts of the Intel modem business, but that the negotiations ended after Apple reached a settlement on royalties dispute with semiconductor manufacturer Qualcomm.
