European stock markets closed mostly lower on Thursday with the exception of the CAC 40 which ended the trading session in the green on the back of strong gains in Airbus.

Investors digested initial jobless claims figures from the United States, which pointed to tightening labor market conditions. Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, Bank of England's Gertjan Vlieghe said policymakers could raise interest rates as soon as the first half of 2022 if the job market makes a stronger-than-expected comeback.

The DAX was down 0.28% at the close in Frankfurt as Bayer led the losses, dropping over 5%. The CAC 40 jumped 0.69% as Airbus surged 9.10% on news the company is ramping up production of its single-aisle passenger jets. The FTSE 100 fell 0.24% on the London Stock Exchange; Johnson Matthey was the worst performer.
