German car manufacturer BMW is seeking to increase the number of sold electric vehicles to 20% of its total vehicle sales, Chief Executive Oliver Zipse revealed on Sunday.

In an interview with Augsburger Allgemeine, Zipse explained the company is "significantly increasing the number of electric vehicles. Between 2021 and 2023, we will build a quarter of a million more electric cars than originally planned." The plan represents a significant change, as BMW's vehicle sales this year comprised of just around 8% of electric cars.

"15,000 private and about 1,300 public charging points would have to be put into operation every week as of today. Unfortunately, we are a long way from that," Zipse concluded. Last month, the luxury carmaker revealed its new electric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV).
