Altmaier believes US-EU trade dispute can be resolved

The European Union and the United States are able to find an agreement on trade following a dispute over subsidies to Airbus and Boeing that led to Washington imposing tariffs a $7.5 billion on EU goods, German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier (pictured) claimed on Thursday.

"I am, as before, confident that it will be possible to avoid a great escalation. If our partner does not want this, then we will naturally protect European interests," the minister said in his speech before the trade committee of the European Parliament.

In July, former European Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan urged the Trump administration to "immediately" lift sanctions against Airbus, warning that Brussels "will be ready to fully avail itself of its own sanction rights" if the two sides fail to reach an agreement.
