Russia's presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday that Moscow is planning to retaliate for the United States' decision to target the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project with "unacceptable" sanctions.

"The situation is being analyzed. We proceed from the understanding that such sanctions are unacceptable to us," Peskov stated. "In any case, such steps will not remain without retaliation," he warned and noted that the countermeasures will be imposed "when it suits the national interests best."

Earlier, Russia's Energy Minister Alexander Novak and German energy supply company Uniper, which is participating in the construction of the pipeline, expressed confidence the Nord Stream 2 will be completed despite Washington's embargo.
