Airbus fired 16 employees amid an investigation into alleged internal spying at the aerospace giant, a spokesman for the company confirmed on Sunday.

According to earlier media reports, the employees obtained secret documents relating to arms deals with the German army, including an acquisition of a communication system.

German prosecutors launched an investigation in September into the suspected misuse of documents at the aerospace giant. Airbus noted it is conducting an internal review in the case and "fully cooperating with relevant authorities to resolve the matter."
