Google updates election ad policy

Google announced that it is making several updates to its election advertising policy, including a new approach to targeting ads and increasing transparency.

"We believe there’s more we can do to further promote increased visibility of election ads. That’s why we’re limiting election ads audience targeting to the following general categories: age, gender, and general location (postal code level)," the company noted. The new policy will first take effect in the United Kingdom next week ahead of the general election in December, while it will be introduced in the European Union sometime in December and in the rest of the world from January 2020.

Furthermore, the tech giant noted that it will expand its election ad transparency policy to include United States state-level candidates and officials, ballot measures, and ads that mention federal or state political parties.
