Europe closes mixed with US tariffs in focus

Equities on major European stock markets finished in the red on Thursday amid rising trade tensions between Washington and Brussels. European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmstrom asserted any measures implemented by the United States would be "short-sighted and counterproductive." In business news, the European Court of Justice ruled Facebook may be ordered to censor hate speech from users in the European Union.

The FTSE 100 was 0.63% lower at the closing bell, as packaging company DS Smith plc tumbled 5.57%. The CAC 40 gained 0.30%, with Airbus SE being the best performer, jumping 4.60%. The DAX for closed for a public holiday.

The euro rose 0.29% against the dollar at 5:29 am ET, changing hands for $1.09901. The pound was up 0.84% at the same time, going for $1.24031 after the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson presented his Brexit plan to the parliament.
