FCC commissioner calls on 5G firms to 'share Western values'

Member of the United States Federal Communications Commission Brendan Carr on Monday urged the US companies currently deploying the country's fifth generation wireless network (5G) to "share [the government's] Western values." During his appearance on CNBC, Carr explained that intellectual property rights and freedom of speech are integral to these values.

The commissioner's statement comes less than a week after the US blacklisted Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. from accessing its technology, in the wake of President Donald Trump's warning against foreign companies developing 5G in the US.

Earlier, Alphabet Inc.'s Google suspended business with the Chinese tech giant, cutting it off from its services, after which multiple US-based firms stopped selling their technology to Huawei.
