Malmstrom: EU wants to talk auto tariffs removal with US

Freitag, 18. Januar 2019 12:14

European Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom stated on Friday that Brussels is willing to put the elimination of auto tariffs back on the negotiating table during its trade talks with Washington. The commissioner pointed out that two proposals were sent to the Council for approval: an agreement to eliminate tariffs on industrial goods and conformity assessment.

Malmstrom said that it is very important to eliminate auto tariffs in trade with the United States due to very high trade volumes, which have a significant influence both on consumers and businesses. She added that Washington did not exclude auto tariffs from its negotiations proposal either. Commissioner Malmstrom reaffirmed that the EU is ready to eliminate car tariffs on US imports as long as Washington shows a willingness to do the same.

Additionally, Malmstrom noted that tariffs on agricultural products will not be part of the trade talks and that Brussels does not intend to start broad free trade agreement negotiations at this time.
