Secretary of State of the United States Mike Pompeo reiterated on Saturday that Nicolas Maduro's regime in Venezuela is "illegitimate" and stated that Washington continues to work on "restoring a real democracy" in the South American country.

"The Maduro regime is illegitimate, and the United States continues to do as we have for the now almost two years of this administration, work diligently to restore a real democracy to that country," the diplomat said. He explained that the US's approach to Maduro consists of diplomatic and economic tools, including sanctions that "prevent the Maduro regime from gaining wealth and having resources."

Speaking to the press in Abu Dhabi, Pompeo went on to say that Venezuela, as well as the region around it, will suffer in a humanitarian crisis with millions of refugees unless "democracy" is restored.
